Thinking Fast Activity

For our first activity it was very similar to my previous DES 300 class a few semesters ago, but this involves the empathy and needs of the person I’m interviewing.

In this case, I interviewed Rex Adams, a “this could be better” critical thinking designer who wants to be helpful for patients and anyone else going through the struggles of physical therapy.

Based on his past experiences, he’s familiar with this subject and wants to find a way to do more for his users in need. With only a few minutes, we were tasked to quickly whip up what could be helpful for his design needs after I interviewed him.

My process behind this design was based on his idea to change the calf stretcher to a more lightweight and mobile hollowed box that could contain other physical therapy tools. My model is of a smaller ratio of the ideal calf stretcher redesign Rex may have in mind, but he liked the idea of it being able to fold out from a rectangle to two triangular rectangles and then flat if need be.

As for Rex's design for me, it was a timer light switch for users who want to install lights in a certain area that needs lighting but wants to be able to turn it off automatically as a way to conserve and prevent excessive lighting. I found his creativity with the lightbulb very cool!
